WELCOME TO BAKERSFIELD, CA

As the first area settled in the San Joaquin Valley, Bakersfield’s history dates back 8,000 years to the Yokuts Indians. It has always been an area of both adventure and tranquility, and was home to some of the more exuberant goldrush activities of 1851.

It seems everyone in the world wanted to be in what was to become Bakersfield. Sheep ranching was brought in by Basques; Spaniards did missionary work; Chinese built the railroads; Italians and Portuguese expanded the farms. The rich soil has made the Bakersfield area incredibly diverse over the years, giving them reason to bill themselves as the “All American City”.

Surrounded by three mountain ranges (Temblor, Techachapis and Sierra Nevadas), the Kern River flows through the valley adding a natural beauty difficult to duplicate anywhere else.

The San Joaquin Valley itself is known worldwide as the leading American producer of grapes, citrus, carrots, cotton, almond and milk. The county is also the leading oil producing county in the continental United States.
